I would like to share with you the circumstances surrounding the installation of my sculpture

at Midoriyama Park on September 22, 2004.

On the previous day (the 21st), I stayed at the office of Fukaya Stone Company.

Under a sky that looked ready to rain at any moment due to the returning typhoon,

I set out together with the owners son.

The forecast says it should hold out through the morning, he said to me.

We have to finish the installation before the ground turns muddy in the rain,

or it will become a serious problem.

Even if we say well come back to Sukagawa after the typhoon passes…”

Both of us were preoccupied with thoughts of the typhoon and the installation.

Before 9 a.m., about twenty sturdy, reliable, and good-natured stonemasons had gathered.

At a glance, I had a strong feeling that these men would be able to successfully

complete the difficult installation of the sculpture.

At 9 oclock, the mayor and officials from the chamber of commerce arrived.

The sculpture and its base were placed at the installation site, and the artists name,

the title, and the concept were read aloud.

Once the mayor gave his approval, the stonemasons began digging,

 and the installation work commenced.

On November 3, 2023,

I visited Fukaya Stone Company in Sukagawa for the first time in a while

to look for stone materials for an outdoor work planned for the following year.

The father had already passed away, and I was told that the sonwho had helped install the sculpture

in 2004had taken over the family business.

He spoke about how difficult things had been for both his life and the business after the earthquake

 and nuclear accident in 2011.
